By Air

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is located in Schwechat, about 20 km south-east of Vienna's center.

At the airport, you can take two railway lines:

  • Cheap, but slow - standard railway (direction usually Wien Floridsdorf, Wien Südbahnhof (Ostbahn) or Stockerau) to the station Wien Mitte. An elevator that takes you directly from the arrival hall to the platform.
  • More expensive and 8 minutes faster - the City Airport Train also takes you to the station Wien Mitte.

At Wien Mitte, take Underground U4, direction Hütteldorf, 2 stops to Karlsplatz.

  • Alternatively, at the airport you may also take the shuttle bus (Vienna Airport Lines) to Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz. From there take Underground U1, direction Reumannplatz, 2 stops to Karlsplatz, or Underground U4, direction Hütteldorf, 3 stops to Karlsplatz.

Your choice will probably depend on which means of transport you get first. Trains and busses circulate at half-hour intervals most of the day. The busses, though not faster than the standard railway, are more expensive (but cheaper than the City Airport Train).

TU library building; we are in the green building behind it Karlsplatz ist the largest Underground station in Wien and close to the Vienna University of Technology (TU) - see the map below. On the U4 platform, take the escalators in the direction you were going by Underground and then leave the Underground station at exit “Wiedner Hauptstraße”. On the Wiedner Hauptstraße, the first building you pass is the library of the TU (with a huge stone bird at its corner); our institute is in the green physics and mathematics building behind (“Freihaus”, a huge green building). Take the elevators in “Turm C” (red) to the 5th floor, where you will find the secretariate of our institute (turn right twice after leaving the elevator and ring at the entrance door).

In case you would like to go to the Computational Materials Science (CMS) group, you will find them at Gußhausstraße 25a, in the Makartvilla, behind the TU electrical engineering buildings - just a few minutes' walk from the physics and mathematics building. You can reach the CMS group also from Underground station Taubstummengasse (line U1), which is closer to the Gusshausstraße. See the map below.

By Train

Vienna has two main train stations, Westbahnhof and Wien Meidling.

At the Westbahnhof: Enter the Underground station Westbahnhof and take Underground U3, direction “Simmering”, 5 stops to “Stephansplatz”, where you have to change to Underground U1, direction “Reumannplatz”, 1 stop to “Karlsplatz”.

Karlsplatz ist the largest Underground station in Wien and close to the Vienna University of Technology (TU) - see the map below. Take the escalators leading to “Karlsplatz” and leave the Underground station at exit “Wiedner Hauptstraße”.

  • Many trains from the west also stop at Wien Hütteldorf, from where you can take Underground U4 directly to Karlsplatz. At Karlsplatz, take the escalators at the rear of the train and leave the Underground station at exit “Wiedner Hauptstraße”.

At the Wien Meidling: When coming from the south, leave the platform at the exit at the rear side of the train. Take Underground U6 (direction “Floridsdorf”), 2 stops to Längenfeldgasse. There, on the other side of the platform, get into Underground U4 (direction “Heiligenstadt”) to “Karlsplatz” (4 stops). At Karlsplatz, take the escalators at the rear of the train, and leave the Underground station at exit “Wiedner Hauptstraße”.

On the Wiedner Hauptstraße, the first building you pass is the library of the TU (with a huge stone bird at its corner); our institute is in the green physics and mathematics building behind (“Freihaus”, a huge green building). See the map below.

You can reach the CMS group also from Underground station Taubstummengasse (line U1, 1 stop from Karlsplatz), which is closer to the Gusshausstraße. See the map below.

By Car

Driving a car in Vienna is not just a pleasure - streets can get rather congested and lots of one-way streets and parking restrictions may confuse you. Also note that you always have to yield to trams, from whatever direction they cross your way. If you come by car, the easiest and cheapest way of getting to us is parking your car somewhere near one of the Underground or railway stations at the periphery (make sure you remember where), and use public transport furtheron. Don't leave valuables, cameras, electronic equipment etc. in your car.

For the bold who want to defy Vienna's street traffic and who can afford the parking fees:

  • Coming from the west, follow the signposts towards the center, which will lead you via “Hietzinger Kai”, “Schönbrunner Schloßstraße” and “Schönbrunner Straße” to the “Rechte Wienzeile”. At the end of the “Rechte Wienzeile” turn sharp right into “Operngasse” (see the map below). There, on the left side of this street (Operngasse is a oneway street there), after the next traffic lights, you will find the underground car park just below the physics and mathematics building (“TU Tiefgarage”).
  • Coming from the south or east, take highway A23 and leave it at exit “Landstraße”. Then follow the “Landstraßer Gürtel” and “Wiedner Gürtel” to “Südtirolerplatz”. Turn right into “Favoritenstraße”, at its end take the left lane, which will take you to “Wiedner Hauptstraße”. Follow the one-way arrows in the map below to get via Friedrichstraße to the “Operngasse”, where you will find the underground car park just below the green physics and mathematics building (“TU Tiefgarage”).

As all car parking facilities in central Vienna, the underground car park below the physics and mathematics building (“TU Tiefgarage”) is rather expensive (EUR 3.30 per hour, EUR 26.40 per day, EUR 105.60 per week, EUR 177.90 per month; 2009 prices). It is open 24 hours a day (the entrance door is closed at night, but it will open automatically). The ticket machine accepts credit cards, 50, 20, 10, 5 EUR banknotes and coins EUR 2, 1, 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.05.

Please note that parking in the streets in central Vienna during daytime is restricted to residents with special permit or short periods (you will need a ticket called “Kurzparkschein” for this).

Public transport in Vienna

Public transport in central Vienna is generally fast and efficient.

Single tickets (EUR 1.80 when bought in advance, EUR 2.20 at the ticket machines in trams and busses) are valid for one journey within Vienna (you may change lines, but you must not interrupt your journey or go back). The “2 Fahrten Fahrschein Halbpreis” (“Kurzstrecke”) is valid for very short trips (one or two stations by Underground without changing lines; EUR 1.80 for two trips). Don't forget to validate your ticket by stamping it at the entrance of Underground stations or immediately after entering a bus or tram (blue or orange stamping machines marked “Entwerter”). Other tickets include those valid 24 hours (EUR 5.70), 48 hours (EUR 10), 72 hours (EUR 13.60), or one week (Mon-Sun, “Wochenkarte”, EUR 14.00). The 8-days-ticket (EUR 28.80) can be used for 8 persons travelling together one day, or four persons on two days etc. - just stamp one stripe per person and day. All prices valid for year 2009. Tickets are available at ticket vending offices and vending machines in the major Underground and train stations as well as at tobacconists' shops.

More informations on public transport in Vienna are available from Wiener Linien (mainly in German, with a shorter English version). In addition, there exists a short summary in English with the most important information for using Vienna Public Transport.
